At Taizhou Changlong Shipbuilding, we proudly celebrate the delivery of the Blue Straits – a bespoke RoPax ferry engineered entirely in our Chinese shipyard for a prominent Hong Kong shipowner. This versatile vessel now navigates the dynamic waters of Southeast Asia, providing seamless island-hopping connectivity across Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Measuring 75 meters LOA with a 16-meter beam, the Blue Straits embodies our three-decade commitment to merging passenger comfort with operational resilience in tropical marine environments.

Purpose-Built Design for Southeast Asia’s Unique Challenges

Understanding our Hong Kong client’s need for a vessel conquering archipelago routes, we engineered the Blue Straitswith corrosion-resistant hull plating and specialized antifouling coatings to withstand high-salinity, warm waters. Its double-deck vehicle bay – accommodating cars and light trucks simultaneously – enables rapid roll-on/roll-off operations even at rudimentary island ports. Certified by RINA (Italian classification society) and exceeding IMO safety standards, the ferry integrates collision-avoidance radars and tropicalized fire suppression systems, critical for congested straits like the Malacca and Sulu Seas.

Passenger-Centric Innovation at Core

We prioritized creating a microcosm of comfort for the 400 passengers traversing Southeast Asia’s island corridors. Beyond air-conditioned cabins with noise-dampened insulation, we equipped public spaces with panoramic windows for coastal sightseeing, dedicated lounge areas with entertainment systems, and non-slip open decks designed for humid climates. Crew welfare was equally considered through ergonomic quarters featuring integrated laundry and refrigeration units – a detail our Hong Kong partner specifically requested for week-long voyages.

Propulsion Excellence and Brand Identity

Powered by twin high-torque diesel engines paired with optimized propeller systems, the Blue Straits achieves 18-knot cruising speeds while minimizing fuel consumption – a decisive advantage for operators facing volatile oil prices. Its distinctive blue-and-white livery, conceptualized with the shipowner’s branding team, enhances visibility across busy ferry terminals while reflecting maritime heritage. During sea trials near Zhoushan archipelago, we validated a 15% reduction in wave resistance versus conventional RoPax designs – translating to lower emissions near fragile ecosystems like Indonesia’s Raja Ampat islands.

Why Global Operators Trust Our Shipyard

The Blue Straits project exemplifies our philosophy: We build partners’ visions, not just hulls. From initial 3D stability simulations through RINA’s steelwork audits, our engineers embedded the Hong Kong owner’s operational requirements into every weld. As specialists in custom vessels for ASEAN markets, we bridge European classification rigor (RINA) with Asian manufacturing efficiency. This vessel joins our diverse fleet of container ships, oil tankers, and scientific vessels delivering worldwide – each engineered to outlast their projected service life.

Charting New Courses in Southeast Asian Connectivity

"The Blue Straits proves how Chinese shipbuilders can redefine regional transport," notes our Lead Naval Architect. "For our Hong Kong partner, we created more than a ferry; we engineered a versatile marine asset supporting tourism growth across Malaysia’s Langkawi, Indonesia’s Batam, and underserved Philippine islands. It underscores our commitment to vessels that exceed contractual specs to become market catalysts."
